Korea is surrounded by nature. What I love is the integration of nature and modern technology. But if you are ever in Asia, there is only one place to get the full experience of the history of Korea, clear ocean water, waterfalls, sun, exquisite food and beautiful women. If none of these interest you, you are not human but a robot of some kind sent from out of space to destroy humanity.

That place is, Jeju-do Island. There is something for everyone; from scuba diving to mountain climbing, Jeju Island is a paradise. I took a short video clip when I went there on vacation.

One of the most beautiful places to visit in the world is the Seoul Tower in Youngsan-gu. Thousands of tourists and Kreans alike flock the city of Seoul each year and one of their top is the Seoul Tower. It is especially beautiful at night. You get a birds eye view of the city while enjoying a nice beverage from the “Sky Cafe,” a coffee shop at the top of the tower. There are digital observatories as well as a restaurant and grill and many other attractions within the tower.

This past Saturday my friend Christy invited me and other foreign teachers to her church (San-ul church) to see her sing. There were other performances scheduled for the evening. It was an amazing night. The other foreign teachers who came, like me, they were in awe at what we saw. Fortunately I brought me camera and you can see for yourself. Although all of the performances were wonderful, the piano solo took my breath away. But I can only speak for myself so, which video do you think, better yet, which performance do you think is the best?

This was absolutely hilarious.

I sat, watched and followed the sounds they made as they were getting ready. Their gentle steps on the shore of the ocean intrigued me as they were suiting up to go for their famous dive; the ocean waves smacking against the rocks, they were ready. On the shores of (Songsan), or as it is better known, the sunrise peak, just like that they disappeared inside the ocean. They are the haenyo women divers of Jeju. You can call them, the mermaids of the island. They can hold their breath for two minutes plus.
When the waves are favorable, they dive to collect sea treasures: abalone, sea urchins, octopus, seaweed and shellfish. This labor was and still is their primary source of income for their families. Why them or why women? Taxation laws were too high for the men to do it but not so for women. Their diving adventures are legendary. It was quite a site to see and taste for a small price, the octopus they caught.

Their statues are everywhere on the island to commemorate their long history and dangerous dives. These women like many icons of admiration die young because of the dangers that come with their occupation.

With an area of about 700 plus square miles (1,126 sq km), Jeju-do lies 60 miles (100 km) southwest of South Korea. It is an exotic island of about $20 million or in distributing businesses, about $10 million is tourism businesses and $30 million in high tech industries.
