Do you trust your boss?

There is a trust issue at my school. Everyone knows it but no one wants to talk about it. Well, I do but it seems like I am the only one who brings it up. Because of cultural differences, I have been informed although not verbally that I maybe treading on ice water. But how do you go on working when and if you cannot trust those you are working for?

One of the definitions of trust at dictionary.reference.com is,

8. something committed or entrusted to one’s care for use or safekeeping, as an office, duty, or the like; responsibility; charge.

It is difficult to trust people when they say one thing and then do another. As the definition above states, trust is a “responsibility.” You are responsible for whatever information a person entrusts you with. You must guard that information with your last breath. I have always believed in this because it is imperative for any relationship to have a level of trust whether in business, friendship, or in family relationships. If any of these are not built on trust, their survival is threatened.

Obviously there are have been a number of incidents that caused me to write this, one of which I wrote about here.The problem also stems from a lack of communication. When there is communication and promises are made, they are not kept, or only a few are kept and the more important once are not. Then, everyone starts to look for what is missing, pretending, when they already know what is missing. When promises are not kept, employees become uneasy. I remember this quote although I am not sure where I heard it from but it went something like,

if a business man has to tell you that they are honest and you should trust them, do not trust them.

So what would you do? Do you tell your boss that you don’t trust them and that they need to change, or do you keep wobbling in the same stew? How would you handle it if you were faced with a situation like this? Do you let your need for a tension-free-working-environment control your level of integrity? Isn’t the tension already there from the lack of honesty anyhow?

And, can you work your hardest for an employer you do not trust?

I had Korean employers once. Never again. They were horrible human beings.
