First 3 ESL Lessons to Teach Your Students

Teach these ESL lessons first before anything else. esl lessons

Learning a new language has its challenges. And one of those challenges is motivating students to learn it. It’s tough to convince your students that learning English is fun if you don’t teach it in a fun way. But before that, it is imperative that your students know what I am about to tell you.

These 3 ESL lessons will help you to have a good start.

      1. Never fear – Mistakes are part of learning process

Strip the students own fears away from them. The biggest challenge students face when learning a language is not so much the difficulty of learning it. It is the fear to try and learn, the fear to speak because they are afraid to make a mistake. So emphasize to your students that mistakes are okay and that they are part of the learning process.

Mistakes are okay and are a part of learning a language

Don’t let this little fear stop your students from learning our beautiful language. And teach them to practice…again and again and again because repetition is the father of learning.

For you as a teacher: Be resourceful

There are many resources at your disposal. make sure you are using all of them. Don’t just preach your ESL lessons to the students. Change your style here and there. Use:

        1. Power points
        2. Flash cards
        3. The blackboard
        4. Videos
        5. Music (kids of all ages love music) if my much older high school students do, then the younger ones certainly will as well
        6. Use recordings, record yourself sometimes and have them listen to it
        7. Sitcoms or sports ( I have one classes of boys using soccer (something they love) as a basis to learn English

Using multiple resources allows your students to learn faster. Don’t limit yourself to only one or two. The internet is the greatest invention ever to me, use it and your students will never get bored learning English.

    2. Have fun and be creative

Encourage your students to be creative and have fun in class. Have them compete with each other. Teach them to watch movies in English, listen to music join in the fun with them as you teach them.

    3. Cultivate – Allow them to be inventive

Encourage them to practice with each other during role plays. And allow them to be inventive so that they own the language as they learn it.

Start the year by teaching your kids these ESL lessons and you will be off to a great start.
